Originally an agricultural water scientist (PhD UC Davis; postdoc Oregon State), 20 years ago I realized the sea and lakes are the key to expanding agriculture and devoted myself to it. I have been: professor and head, Biosystems Engineering, University of Costa Rica; project leader, CATIE, operating in five countries; coordinator, UNDP/GEF/GTZ project operating in eight countries; visiting professor, Cornell University; Dean, Panamerican Agricultural College; director, board of directors, Costa Rica irrigation and water authority. I have received grants from USAID, World Bank, Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada and others. Currently, I coordinate three integrated, small-scale mariculture projects.
